Scotty Karate - 2.26.04
When I walked into Beerland to have a drink I thought I’d be in and out. Little did I know I would be captivated by a solo singer/guitarist in a ten-gallon hat and chaps, known by the name of Scotty Karate. With his smooth honkytonk guitar style and his straight-ahead country lyrics (which at times were very humorous) he came from the heart with what he wanted to say. Who knew this country boy was a yankee? He hailed from the Detroit Rock City - you know, the home of the guys that wear all that make-up. Come to find out he was born in Oklahoma and moved to Michigan at the age of ten. He played in a style like he grew up in the south and had been in the country community his whole life. As a single performer he pulled off a great mix of honkytonk with a little bit of the blues through a 25-watt Fender amp and did it well. Adorned in full cowboy garb, it was as if he had earned the right to wear the clothes he had on his back. Although the crowd was just a few people, he put everything he had into it. Scotty Karate the Yankee cowboy from Michigan did it and he did it right. - Mikey
